Real estate company is seeking an experienced Controller to lead their accounting team and oversee financial operations within a dynamic property management environment. This role is pivotal in maintaining financial accuracy, implementing standardized processes, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, problem-solving capabilities, and a hands-on approach to improving financial operations.
This position reports directly to the President, with a dotted-line reporting structure to the CFO and Director of Accounting. The Controller will manage eight direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Manage financial reporting processes for multiple P&Ls, including corporate and fractional ownership structures.
- Oversee cash accounts, bank reconciliations, and ensure financial records are accurate.
- Ensure compliance with CRA and HUD reporting requirements.
- Standardize and improve accounting procedures following previous inconsistencies.
- Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and mentor a team of eight direct reports, fostering collaboration and professional development.
- Guide long-tenured staff through process improvements, balancing change management with respect for institutional knowledge.
- Work closely with executive leadership to align financial strategies with business goals.
- Process Improvement & System Implementation
- Drive the transition from AppFolio to Yardi, ensuring a smooth and efficient implementation.
- Develop and implement standardized accounting procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to refine financial operations and reporting structures.
- Proven experience as a Controller, preferably within a property management or real estate environment.
- Strong background in financial reporting and multi-entity accounting.
- Experience managing 5+ direct reports, with a focus on team development and leadership.
- Hands-on expertise in bank reconciliations, cash management, and P&L oversight.
- Familiarity with CRA and HUD reporting is highly desirable.
- Yardi experience is a strong plus; prior experience leading system conversions is beneficial.
